In a Shared Hosting environment, the provider mantains the system, installs updates, installs security patches and is responsible for the tech support. In other words, you don’t have to think or manage these technical aspects.
You can generally find 2 types of Shared Hosting: Linux-based and Windows-based, depending on your needs.
The most common software installed in a Shared Hosting environment include: Content Management Systems (CMS) like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Magento, Wiki etc.
It’s a good choice if you are starting new websites because it is cheap and generally you can upgrade to a better Hosting plan if your site requires more resources.
Web Developers, Web Agencies, System Integrators are the typical Web Hosting resellers. Some reseller plans give resellers the way to create own plans and pricing and they can also assign a custom brand.
Generally the Hosting Provider is responsible to mantain the infrastructure (hardware mainly) and the server owner is responsible for configurations, security and updates).
Usually you can choose the Operating System (Linux, Windows etc..) and the provider will install for you. You will receive all the details and how to connect to it in order to start working (cPanel, Plesk, etc..).
Performances are better than a traditional Shared Hosting but the cost is higher. You can move your site to a VPS when you are starting to reach a good amount of traffic / consumed resources and the shared hosting is no more suitable for your needs because your site requires more power.
It is not a VPS but a real computer leased by the customer and hosted inside the datacenter. Generally the customer leases the server and the provider pre-installs the Operating System and the basic software needs. Some hosting companies let the customer to rent a dedicated server to do virtual hosting (VPS).
Hardware failures can be a problem because it’s physical, and you know, things can happen… customers can also choose to mirror the hard disks (to prevent a single disk failure) but the cost is higher.
It’s the best choice if the sites require high amount of resources and it can offer more power than a VPS. Usually, the price is higher than a VPS, but some hosting companies offer good prices compared to VPS Hosting.
